Abstract

In this work the attention is focused on the study of masonry walls built of stones with random properties and shapes. We consider two revealing random patterns: a first case, in which aggregates of small size are surrounded by a softer matrix, and a second case where randomly distributed softer inclusions are plunged in a harder matrix. The constitutive behavior of such materials is investigated adopting homogenization techniques in order to obtain the overall constitutive coefficients directly related to the actual structure. We here propose an extension of statistical homogenization procedures for composites perceived as Cosserat continua, both at the micro and macro level. A computational estimate of the bounds for the classical and micropolar elastic coefficients for the two kind of random media considered.
