The article deals with the style and language of Late antique epigraphical poetry and iits relationship with the so-called ‘modern style’, typical of the literary epic (of Nonnus of Panopolis and his followers), through the analysis of some case studies. Categories as ‘anticipation’, proper imitation, and similarity, both in metrics and in language, to the Nonnian style, if applied to epigraphical poetry are helpful to better understand the dynamics of diffusion of literary taste, the incidence of school education, the expectations of patrons and audiences. In the last part of the article I suggest to take account not only of a ‘reference norm’ (as the Nonnian style), but also of the complex play of multiple styles, forms, and themes which is a typical feature of Late antique culture and society.

Abstract
The article deals with the style and language of Late antique epigraphical poetry and iits relationship with the so-called ‘modern style’, typical of the literary epic (of Nonnus of Panopolis and his followers), through the analysis of some case studies. Categories as ‘anticipation’, proper imitation, and similarity, both in metrics and in language, to the Nonnian style, if applied to epigraphical poetry are helpful to better understand the dynamics of diffusion of literary taste, the incidence of school education, the expectations of patrons and audiences. In the last part of the article I suggest to take account not only of a ‘reference norm’ (as the Nonnian style), but also of the complex play of multiple styles, forms, and themes which is a typical feature of Late antique culture and society.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
