Abstract
The animal ethics designed to broaden the circle of moral consideration beyond the boundaries of the human species. At the heart of animal ethics there are arguments against speciesism and ideas about the moral status. The rejection of speciesism implies that the moral status should be recognized on the basis of traits possessed by the individual from belonging to different species. Basic skills such as pleasure and pain are considered sufficient to grant moral respect for animals. Ability to assign these animals raises an old problem, that of animal minds. Despite its origins ethology has refused to address the issue, today the cognitive ethology investigates issues with scientific methods such as cognition and emotion in animals. The scientific research on animal minds is a valuable source of empirical evidence in favor of the ideas that ethics animal moves about the moral status of non-humans. In addition, cognitive ethology data seems to confirm the trend of common sense to consider animal behavior as driven by intentions and emotions. The animal ethics should seriously consider the '"critical anthropomorphism" cognitive ethology to provide richer analysis of the moral issues that characterize the relations between humans and animals.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
