The effect of NO on the activity of a Cu/V/K/Cl catalyst in the combustion of soot generated in the flame of a gas oil burner has been investigated. Temperature programmed oxidation (TPO) of soot-catalyst mixtures in the absence and in the presence of NO in the reactant gas was performed with a flow microreactor. The effect of NO was also investigated by TPO of soot collected on a ceramic filter supporting the Cu/V/K/Cl catalyst. In all cases the presence of NO resulted in increasing the rate of carbon combustion, mainly due to carbon oxidation by NO2 formed by NO oxidation on the same catalyst. Therefore, the Cu/V/K/Cl catalyst is capable of activating in the same range of temperatures the oxidation of both soot and NO. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
