The archaeological investigations in the years 2007-2009 in the Saint Paul’s Outside the Walls “Orto” have discovered a part of the large settlement around the apostolic church, known from written sources as Johannipolis or castellum/castrum Sancti Pauli. Almost all building phases were associated with significant remains of construction activities, especially mortar mixers. Most of these were located in free areas among buildings; these areas appear to be "specialized" in connection with the organization of the building sites. The high number of finds has promoted an interdisciplinary research, more generally focused on reconstructing the organization of medieval building sites in Rome. The analysis of the mortar in the walls and in the lime and mortar mixers (macroscopic and chemical-petrographic analysis) are of primary interest.

Abstract
The archaeological investigations conducted in 2007-2009 in the Garden of the Abbey of St. Paul Outside the Walls have brought to light a large area of the agglomerate formed around the basilica and apostolic known from medieval sources as Johannipolis or castellum / Castrum Sancti Pauli. At almost all building phases were correlated tracks consisting of construction activities, especially different mixers for the processing of the lime, the majority of these have been located, for various periods, in Vacant spaces between the various blocks built, which service areas are configured as "specialized" in its relation to the organization of the various construction sites. The exceptional richness of findings has led to activate an interdisciplinary research aimed more generally to rebuild the organization of construction sites in Rome and the medieval building systems, building in particular on the analysis of the ligands in the structures and artifacts for the production of lime and mortars, in relation to which were initiated macroscopic analysis and chemical-petrografiche.The archaeological investigations in the years 2007-2009 in the Saint Paul's Outside the Walls "Garden" have Discovered a large part of the settlement around the apostolic church, known from written sources as Johannipolis or castellum / Castrum Sancti Pauli.
