This essay analyses the principle of ‘hospitality’, in that this idea defines an area of contact between ‘outsiders’ which is based on social reciprocity. Today it has become increasingly important to re-examine this concept since it is especially today, with the spread of globalisation and migration across the entire planet, that the way in which ‘outsiders’ relate to each other has become a decisive factor in our communal lives in society. A factor that increasingly involves multi-ethnic societies, exposing them to a double risk that prevalent political systems, even democratic ones, are finding difficult to avoid.
