The aim of the study is the identification and the quantification of the effects due to operation irregularity and the appreciation of benefits due to automation. The present state of regularity of line A of Rome's metro is analysed. A methodology based on the analysis of the actual operational data is applied. The main goal is to define, through the quantification of some representative parameters, the state of the present operations. The second step is the definition of all causes of irregularities. This analysis allows to obtain the incidence of human actions on traffic quality both for lines and stations. Finally possible actions towards automation are defined, applying them gradually from the present situation, ruled by traditional operation (with driver and under human control and supervision), to the situation with complete automatic driving and control. The simulation allows to evaluate the results of automation. © 2011 ASCE.
