Representations of Nation and Europe in Italy: Results from a public opinion survey.

This study investigates the representation of the national and European identity among people in Italy. It is mainly interested in exploring the meanings of the sense of belonging to the nation and Europe, and what they have in common, in a cultural, symbolic and civic sense. Territory, language, culture, history, economy and policy may all serve as objects with which people can establish the notion of national or European identity, but it is important to analyse which are of primary or lesser importance. It is also my aim to investigate the relationship between European and other identities (i.e., national, regional, local, etc.), and their relationships with some socio-demographic variables.
