From a didactic and research experience developed at “Sapienza” University of Rome on the Theories of Design, the paper is related to the relationship developed between design and theories, while witnessing the accomplishment of design by now as an academic discipline. Therefore, it seeks to understand its field while outlining its complex character in contemporary post-industrial societies in facing knowledge, as well as scientific concepts and technological processes, where it plays the role of connection. As Design happens to be a device producing knowledge while giving an interpretation to reality and being a motor for transformation, the contribution will rise and try to answer to some question: what is the position of theory facing design? What role in education and research? What issues should it develop? What approaches and methodologies? And moreover, which is the social role of project in advanced societies where ‘everybody design’?
