The prosopopoeia of Appius Claudius Caecus directed against Clodia in Cicero’s Pro Caelio shows on the one hand a strong influence of rhetoric and literature (esp. theatre and Ennius’ Annales), reflects on the other the long and bitter political controversy against Clodius and Clodii already present in other speeches. Echoes of representations and Roman monuments blend with contemporary historiographic traditions of complex assessment.
