L'identità cristiana nel dibattito fra cattolici e donatisti

L’intenso dibattito in cui si confrontarono cattolici e donatisti non fu altro che una disputa intorno ad un’identità contesa. Come emerge dai documenti, entrambe le “Partes” rivendicarono infatti per sé il titolo di “Catholica”, e ciò fecero perché con quel termine, al di là delle specificazioni tecniche indicate da ciascuno, intendevano qualificare se stessi come gli unici, autentici cristiani o, il che fa lo stesso, come l’unica, autentica Chiesa. In un confronto continuo, che si protrasse per oltre un secolo, cattolici e donatisti vennero così elaborando due identità contrapposte, ma per molti versi simili: comune era la tradizione cui si richiamavano e singolarmente affine la base scritturistica di riferimento. Tuttavia, mentre i cattolici seppero progressivamente adeguare la propria autorappresentazione al mutare delle circostanze, i donatisti rimasero rigidamente ancorati ad una definizione di sé che non poteva sostenere le sollecitazioni di una società in continua effervescenza. Ciò determinò la sopravvivenza dei primi e il lento isterilirsi dei secondi. The intense debate engaging Catholics and Donatists was none other than a dispute over a contended identity. As documents reveal, both parties made claim to the title of “Catholic” and did so because this term, regardless of the respective technical specifications, served to qualify each of them as the sole, authentic Christians and, by the same toke,, as the sole, authentic Church. In a continuous confrontation, lasting over a century, Catholics and Donatists therefore elaborated two opposing identities that were in many respects similar: they were based on a common tradition, and the range of scriptural reference was singularly alike. However, while the Catholics were able to gradually adapt their self-representation to changing circumstances, the Donatists remained rigidly anchored to a self-definition that could not withstand the pressures of a continually mutating society. This determined the survival of the former and the slow decline of the latter.
