Theinteractionsbetweenintestinalmicrobiota,immunesystem,andpathogensdescribethehumangutasacomplexecosystem,whereallcomponentsplayarelevantroleinmodulatingeachotherandinthemaintenanceofhomeostasis.Thebalanceamongthegutmicrobiotaandthehumanbodyappeartobecrucialforhealthmaintenance.Intestinalparasites,bothprotozoansandhelminths,interactwiththemicrobialcommunitymodifyingthebalancebetweenhostandcommensalmicrobiota.Ontheotherhand,gutmicrobiotarepresentsarelevantfactorthatmaystronglyinterferewiththepathophysiologyoftheinfections.Inadditiontothefunctionthatgutcommensalmicrobiotamayhaveintheprocessesthatdeterminethesurvivalandtheoutcomeofmanyparasiticinfections,includingtheproductionofnutritivemacromolecules,alsoprobioticscanplayanimportantroleinreducingthepathogenicityofmanyparasites.Onthesebases,thereisagrowinginterestinexplainingtherationaleonthepossibleinteractionsbetweenthemicrobiota,immuneresponse,inflammatoryprocesses,andintestinalparasites.

Abstract
