In terms of reserves, coal is the most important energy source available in the world. Estimated world coal reserves are sufficient to guarantee, at present level of consumption, about 250 years of electricity production, compared with 40 years for oil and 60 years for natural gas. This paper considers historical, economic, politic and technological reasons behind the comeback of this energy source. In particular, we analyse the new clean technologies made in rendering the coal source more compatible with environmental and health regulations. In Italy, the strategy adopted by ENEL is, therefore, that of modifying its energy source mix. According to the plans made by ENEL the energy contribution of coal will increase also with the valorization of Sulcis coalfield.

Abstract
In terms of reserves, coal is the most important energy source available in the world. Estimated world coal reserves are sufficient to guarantee, at present level of consumption, about 250 years of electricity production, compared with 40 years for oil and 60 years for natural gas. This paper considers historical, economic, politic and technological reasons behind the comeback of this energy source. In particular, we analyse the new clean technologies made in rendering the coal source more compatible with environmental and health regulations. In Italy, the strategy adopted by ENEL is, therefore, that of modifying its energy source mix. According to the plans made by ENEL the energy contribution of coal will increase also with the valorization of Sulcis coalfield.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
