The recent death of Niklas Luhmann provides an opportunity to draw attention to his vast scientific production and in particular on the two volumes of "" The Company of society '"(tit. orig" "Die Gesellschaft der Gesellschaft" ", Suhrkamp, Frankfurt am Main, 1997), an impressive work with which the author has presented the final chapter and summary of a theory of society developed over thirty years. The huge cognitive effort was motivated, according to the author, by the fact that starting from the classics, that for nearly a century, sociology has not made any significant progress in the theory of society: "In the succession of the ideological struggles of the nineteenth century the paradoxes of communication on society in society have been resolved in disputes with theoretical formulas as structuralist / processualistico, domain / conflict, yes / critical or conservative / liberal. No doubt the sociology produced in very many areas both methodological and theoretical, and especially in the accumulation of empirical knowledge, but as it were left out of the description of society as a whole. " The intent is to show how "with a sufficient description of the company can be identified in a somewhat 'more considered what you can do" (p. 20). To this end, Luhmann has always felt the need to import theories, concepts and stimuli from other disciplines, the so-called second cybernetics (von Foester Maturana) contributions to the most recent and sophisticated systems theory, in order to make their theory sufficiently abstract and complex to describe, integrating a historical perspective, the modern society. Also "" Die Gesellschaft der Gesellschaft "" widely affected by these influences, but despite the terminological and conceptual abstraction and complexity of the theoretical derived therefrom, and that has always helped to make Luhmann an author rather contrasted, surprise the coherence and logical consistency, combined with the usual ironic realism, in which the reflection unfolds through 1164 pages that make up the work, produced only with the help of an old-fashioned typewriter. The particularity of the work lies in the fact that the discussion of issues already addressed in previous works, here re-proposed in a more systematic and in many cases with a comparative-historical approach, there are also interesting observations on topics related to current events.

Abstract

The recent death of Niklas Luhmann provides an opportunity to draw attention to his vast scientific production and in particular on the two volumes of "" The Company of society '"(tit. orig" "Die Gesellschaft der Gesellschaft" ", Suhrkamp, Frankfurt am Main, 1997), an impressive work with which the author has presented the final chapter and summary of a theory of society developed over thirty years.
