Una volta superata (dai fatti, dalle inchieste giudiziarie, dai resoconti locali) la errata quanto diffusa convinzione che i fenomeni mafiosi siano, nel nostro Paese, una dimensione esclusiva del “disastrato Mezzogiorno”, le ricerche degli esperti nostrani si sono andate progressivamente concentrando sulle dinamiche di radicamento in territori non tradizionali (Sciarrone 1998) e sui modi in cui le diverse mafie hanno progressivamente migrato verso il Nord (Varese 2006). Grande attenzione è stata attribuita alla comprensione delle caratteristiche locali, per analogie e differenze, oltre che al sistema di implicazioni possibili in un diverso contesto socio-territoriale, dove venivano senz’altro meno alcune interpretazioni storiche che pure avevano per lungo tempo dominato il dibattito come la questione dell’arretratezza (Arlacchi 1988) o i riferimenti classici alla debolezza del capitale sociale (Bourdieu 1983; Coleman 1988; Putnam 2002), piegato agli interessi privati (Mutti 2000; Bjørnskov 2003), e rivisitato in profondità.
