A simple collocation method based on a non-polynomial choice of the trial functions is developed. It is applied in construction of approximate inertial manifolds of a typical reaction/diffusion scheme containing non-polynomial nonlinearities. The model system is related to the self-ignition properties of stockpiles and considered in terms of a one-dimensional spatial approximation. Combustion is accounted for by means of simple first-order exothermic kinetics.
