This is a review article of a miscellaneous volume concerning European views of Alexander the Great in the modern era (14th – 20th centuries, up to the fascist period in Italy). The volume is analysed in detail, essay by essay, throughout its four sections devoted to four strands of the cultural heritage of Alexander’s historical as well as legendary figure: these strands follow, respectively, the transformations of Alexander in the iconography; the development of the literary and historiographical interpretation of Alexander; Alexander’s role in theatre and music works; and the frequent use of the Macedonian king as a model, both positive and negative, in the philosophical discourse.
