Linear Landau damping of oblique Alfvén waves has been proven to be a significant mechanism to account for the radial variations of power spectra of magnetic-field fluctuations in the solar wind. In this paper we compute, by using quasi-linear theory, the power that, through this mechanism, goes into particle heating and then discuss the relevance of this in relation to temperature variations observed in the solar wind.

Abstract

Linear Landau damping of oblique Alfvén waves has been proven to be a significant mechanism to account for the radial variations of power spectra of magnetic-field fluctuations in the solar wind. In this paper we compute, by using quasi-linear theory, the power that, through this mechanism, goes into particle heating and then discuss the relevance of this in relation to temperature variations observed in the solar wind.
