The article deals with the historical reconstruction of the creation of a Garamantian limes, formed by a series of forts along the modern Libyan southern border. The paper presents the result of a ten years long archaeological investigation on a period practically unknown in the area. No previous work had been carried out in the Acacus region apart for a small excavations at the necropolis of Ghat and Barkat during the Italian colonial period. The archaeological excavations carried out by the Italo-Libyan archaeological expedition in the Acacus and Messak, from 1997 to 2007, brought to light a completely forgotten civilization in the hearth of the Sahara.
