To prevent blood coagulation, or at least to reduce the quantity of anticoagulants added for blood storage in glass containers, polyamidoamines that bond covalently to the glass surface and able to complex with heparin [9005-49-6] were investigated. The polyamidoamine used was 1,4-bisacryloylpiperazine-N,N'-dimethylethylenediamine copolymer [29930-20-9]; the glass samples, treated and untreated, were washed with CHCl3, H2O, and EtOH, the reaction with heparin was carried out in H2O-EtOH-AcOH (40:60:1) and MgKα was the source for the XPS. Heparin bonded to the polyamidoamine treated surface, and the stability of stored blood towards coagulation showed a significant improvement, indicating the ability of surface supported polyamidoamines to react with heparin to form anticoagulant complexes.
