The paper focuses on the debate between the Stoic Aristo and Chrysippus about the role of pleasure in moral human development. Through examination of the evidence, the paper shows that some of the development of Stoic ethics was worked out in response to Aristo’s objections, from the theory of οἰκείωσις up to the theory of virtue. At the same time it argues that Aristo’s concept of pleasure stems from Plato’s Protagoras to which the Stoic debate about the unity and plurality of virtue was indebted.

Abstract
The paper focuses on the debate between the Stoic Aristo and Chrysippus about the role of pleasure in moral human development. Through examination of the evidence, the paper shows that some of the development of Stoic ethics was worked out in response to Aristo’s objections, from the theory of οἰκείωσις up to the theory of virtue. At the same time it argues that Aristo’s concept of pleasure stems from Plato’s Protagoras to which the Stoic debate about the unity and plurality of virtue was indebted.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
