Rate data were obtained for the formation of resorcinol and hydroquinone polymethylene ethers in Me2SO-H2O (99:1 vol. ratio) at 25° by intramol. alkylation of m- or p-KOC6H4O(CH2)nBr (n = 8-10, 12; 8-10, 12, 16; resp.). The reactivity falls off rapidly with decreasing n-values owing to an increasingly greater strain in the smaller cyclophane systems.
