The name Idameneus, attested only in two archaic inscriptions from Rhodes (one of which is very problematic as to reading and purpose), is usually linked with the very common Idomeneus, but the Mycenaean and Micrasiatic onomastic evidence points to a completely different origin. Moreover, there is a third - till now ignored - instance of Idameneus on an Attic stamnos, in which this name belongs to a character involved in the escape from the Cyclops' cave together with Odysseus. This proves that Idameneus is a poetic name and that the poetic 'convenience' played an important role in his history and development.

Abstract
The name Idameneus, attested only in two archaic inscriptions from Rhodes (one of which is very problematic as to reading and purpose), is usually linked with the very common Idomeneus, but the Mycenaean and Micrasiatic onomastic evidence points to a completely different origin. Moreover, there is a third - till now ignored - instance of Idameneus on an Attic stamnos, in which this name belongs to a character involved in the escape from the Cyclops' cave together with Odysseus. This proves that Idameneus is a poetic name and that the poetic 'convenience' played an important role in his history and development.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
