This paper provides an analysis of the role played by D. Musti's seminal book Polibio e l'imperialismo romano, Naples 1978, not only in Polybian studies (§§ 1-2), but also, more generally, in Italian studies on ancient historiography (§§ 3-5). The novelty of professor Musti's approach is considered against the background of the judgements on Polybius by some distinguished 20th Century Italian scholars (Benedetto Croce, Gaetano De Sanctis, Giorgio Pasquali, Marcello Gigante). Most of them seem to have anachronistically read Polybius through Hegelian spectacles, attributing him a positive evaluation of the role of Roman hegemony in world history. By the restitution of Polybius to his Achaean context, Musti managed to demonstrate that the historian's attitude to the Roman imperium was far more complex.

Abstract
By the restitution of Polybius to his Achaean context, Musti managed to demonstrate that the historian's attitude to the Roman imperium was far more complex.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
