The role of port cities and the nature of its economic relations with its neighboring areas are determined by the interplay of a variety of different geographical, economic, political and technological factors. The comparative studies of similarities evident in the historical development of port cities in different locations, as Barcelona and Glasgow, can illustrate how these factors shaped the development of the relations between a port, its city and neighboring region.
