Our results confirm the findings by Howell (1977) that silver staining is not specific for the nucleolus organizer (NO), but for some substance, probably an acidic protein, that is localized contiguously to the functioning NO and it is associated to the rRNA being transcribed at these regions. These data support the hypothesis that silver staining of the NO of metaphase chromosomes is related to functioning.

Abstract
Our results confirm the findings by Howell (1977) that silver staining is not specific for the nucleolus organizer (NO), but for some substance, probably an acidic protein, that is localized contiguously to the functioning NO and it is associated to the rRNA being transcribed at these regions. These data support the hypothesis that silver staining of the NO of metaphase chromosomes is related to functioning.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
