ABSTRACT DEL POSTER. Historical matters related to Ninivite 5 Horizon discovery. Early signs of this horizon were found in Niniveh G-H sectors during 1929-30 excavation campaign and seemed at first to come from <levels> following Late Uruk. Later on Mallowan, opening a <survey> in the area of Ishtar Temple, 27.5 m. deep, found at <level> 5 similar ware laying below Late Uruk <depositi> (identified from the presence of Belleved Rim Bowls) and Jemdet Nasr of <level> 4 (Reserved Slip Ware). In 1932 Speiser found Ninivite 5 ware in Tell Billa, and typologically divided: an earlier phase characterized by Painted Ware and a more recent phase, characterized by Incised Ware. Nevertheless many scholars still prefer the term Ninivite 5. In 1964 data from new archeological research lead to consider Ninivite 5 as a ware horizon which would have extended itself as Painted during JN-EDI phases and as Incised during EDII-III. When similar forms were found in Tepe Sialk III it was presumed the origin of this production might be placed in Iran. The diffusionist hypothesis was soon opposed by: 1) the finding of Ninivite 5 ware in EU <levels> by B. Abu al Soof at Tell Qaliny Agha (near Erbil in Iraq), 2) the verification conducted by Shwartz at Tell Leilan, which proved Painted Ware had not preceded Incised Ware.
