Quantum fluctuations about a Yang-Mills pseudoparticle solution are studied from the point of view of spontaneous breakdown of conformal symmetry. It is argued that the linearization procedure by which one passes from the nonlinear Yang-Mills equation to linear equations for the small-oscillation modes leads to a group contraction of the conformal group. The number of degrees of freedom of the n-pseudoparticle solution naturally turns out to be 8 n-3, n being the Pontryagin index. © 1979 Società Italiana di Fisica.
