This paper presents a study on the management of bursty loss-sensitive sources traffic in ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) networks. In particular, the study is focused on the policing mechanisms, which allow the active connections traffic to be monitored in order to avoid congestion. A new policing mechanism, “double threshold avalanche tagging” (DTAT) is developed and its behaviour is tested using an ATM network model and assuming homogeneous sources. In such a new mechanism the advantage of adding a per-burst marking component to traditional per-cell marking based mechanisms, such as VLB (virtual leaky bucket) and AT (avalanche tagging), is considered. The results obtained confirm that the introduction of a per-burst monitoring component contributes both to increase network performance and to improve network resource utilization
