The design issues for an high throughput gateway between a Gigabit/s LAN based on the CRMA access protocol and a BISDN based on ATM are presented. An alternative to the ATM Adaptation Layer proposed by the CCITT so far is introduced, in order to allow a fast HW based processing of frames inside the gateway. The hardware architecture of the gateway is described with particular reference to the mechanisms used to implement the SAR protocol. Finally, a comprehensive simulation study on the gateway buffer size requirements is presented, assuming a realistic CRMA network scenario. Different situations are considered to evaluate the buffer occupancy; as a result, some criteria for the buffer dimensioning are proposed.

Abstract
The design issues for an high throughput gateway between a Gigabit/s LAN based on the CRMA access protocol and a BISDN based on ATM are presented. An alternative to the ATM Adaptation Layer proposed by the CCITT so far is introduced, in order to allow a fast HW based processing of frames inside the gateway. The hardware architecture of the gateway is described with particular reference to the mechanisms used to implement the SAR protocol. Finally, a comprehensive simulation study on the gateway buffer size requirements is presented, assuming a realistic CRMA network scenario. Different situations are considered to evaluate the buffer occupancy; as a result, some criteria for the buffer dimensioning are proposed.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
