The electron-impact fragmentation patterns of some N-acyl-N'-tosylhydrazines are presented and discussed. The fragmentations described are supported by the presence of metastable ions. An unusual consecutive elimination of 2 neutral fragments (diimide and SO) from the central part of the mol. was found. This loss is followed by recombination of the 2 remaining fragments. The compds. RCONHNHSO2C6H4-p-Me were examd., where R = Me, n-C8H17, n-C11H23, n-C13H27, n-C15H31, n-C17H35, ClH2C(CH2)2, Ph, PhCH2, Ph(CH2)2, p-MeC6H4, m-MeC6H4, p-ClC6H4, m-ClC6H4, p-MeOC6H4, m-MeOC6H4, p-O2NC6H4, m-O2NC6H4, 2-naphthyl, 1-naphthyl, 1-naphthylmethyl, or cyclohexylmethyl. The ionization beam energy was 70 eV, ion source temp. 290°, accelerating voltage 3.5 kV, trap current 60 μA, and probe temp. 100-200°.
