The spectral behavior of two different polymers utilized as packaging material for foodstuff, i.e., PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and PLA (polylactic acid), have been investigated by NIR hyperspectral imaging in order to improve their further recycling process. The acquired data were analyzed using multivariate analysis methods, i.e., Principal Component Analysis for data exploration and Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Analysis for classification. Good prediction results were obtained for the identification of both polymers, that were clearly distinguished from the background without the need of a segmentation step. The developed procedures based on hyperspectral imaging can be utilized for quality control purposes and/or for the definition of innovative sorting logics in the recycling process.

Abstract
The spectral behavior of two different polymers utilized as packaging material for foodstuff, i.e., PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and PLA (polylactic acid), have been investigated by NIR hyperspectral imaging in order to improve their further recycling process. The acquired data were analyzed using multivariate analysis methods, i.e., Principal Component Analysis for data exploration and Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Analysis for classification. Good prediction results were obtained for the identification of both polymers, that were clearly distinguished from the background without the need of a segmentation step. The developed procedures based on hyperspectral imaging can be utilized for quality control purposes and/or for the definition of innovative sorting logics in the recycling process.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
