This essay discusses the first thirty years of opera on Italian television, from the beginning of regular broadcasting in 1954 to the live transmission of Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims in Luca Ronconi's mise en scene from the Rossini Opera Festival in 1984. It places this phenomenon in the context of Italian culture and society of the time, and probes issues of remediation.
