Background: children and adolescents coming from foreign countries are a growing phenomenon in Italy. Scientific literature highlights the difficulties in adaptation among these minors in several psychological domains. The experience of being a immigrant is potentially traumatic as it implies losses and attempts to build new bonds. Objective: to comprehend the effects of immigration on the adaptation capacity of the immigrant minors, and to review the intervention methodologies in order to redefine the relationship care-context. The theoretical framework of the theory of attachment, as a theory on the life span, lets us focus on the quality of the current experiences which, if favouring the feeling of security, allow to contrast the potentially traumatic experience of being an immigrant. Method: risks and potentialities of the migratory phenomenon will be analyzed focusing both on parenting, with particular attention to the relationship between parenting and culture, and on minors, with particular attention to first and second generation, as well as adopted minors. Conclusion: further steps in the research are needed: to reflect on the effects of the current policies on immigration and international adoption on the adaptation of immigrant minors to their new cultural context; to deepen trans-cultural studies on parenting, considering the vast range of the background cultures of the migrant minors; to analyze, more precisely, the adaptation processes particularly regarding second generation minors who, being in a more advanced phase of the migratory process, can provide useful clues to identifying adaptation strategies; to redefine the evaluation through the tuning of instruments of evaluation taking into account the cultural factors and the impact of the migration on the functioning of children and adolescents; finally, to redefine the care-relationship so that the operator and the user have a cultural, empathic and expressive exchange.

Abstract

Background: children and adolescents coming from foreign countries are a growing phenomenon in Italy. Scientific literature highlights the difficulties in adaptation among these minors in several psychological domains. The experience of being a immigrant is potentially traumatic as it implies losses and attempts to build new bonds. However, our knowledge on the modalities in which these minors are raised in our Country, on their health conditions and on the difficulties that they can meet in the relationships with the health system and/or the educational system, is still in progress and not yet systematized.
