Ancient forest stands have come to light in different sites. Stura di Lanzo (Piedmont ) e Todi-Monte Santo (Umbria) have both been investigated.The analysis of samples taken from trunks lying or stumps still in position of growth indicates the presence of Taxodiaceae in the Stura di Lanzo and in the Monte Santo areas; in the latter locality plenty of Cupressaceae macroremains have been found.
