Abstract

New technologies for evolving opaque building envelopes Experimenting on opaque building envelopes means operating on new physical resources and optimizing materials’performance, therefore it means acting upon the chemical composition of the material itself, mixing it with other materials in order to improve its performance in terms of attenuation (s) of the internal superficial temperature range span compared to the external environmental one and in terms of phase delay (f ). It also defines an experimentation on building technologies which, from built on site wet technologies switches to dry technologies; it also means to improve installation and set up phases when dealing with forms that could not have been built with traditional technologies. Moreover, it represents the introduction of energy efficiency in construction processes, making them more sustainable and lowering as much as possible their impact on the environment. Last, but not least, it means innovating in order to find low cost solutions. In addition to the above mentioned aspects, the evolution of new and experimental technologies for the opaque building envelope allows us to build components capable of: • obtaining characteristic performance indicators for each component, using smaller quantities of matter, saving on raw materials and, as a consequence, on non renewable energy sources; • using renewable materials and non polluting production processes; • being built easily, with materials that can be separated during the maintenance, transformation, disassembling and demolition phases, for a faster set up of the construction site and for a full recycling of the building; • storing incident solar energy and transforming it into heat; • becoming active components of energy production, integrating technological devices linked to energy production from renewable sources.
