Surfactin is a cyclic lipopeptide produced by Bacillus subtilis by thiotemplate mechanism of peptide synthesis. Two mutant strains were constructed and showed to produce surfactin. The results show that the coordinate transcription and physical linkage of domains are not strictly required for the correct functioning of the multienzyme system.
