A prospective study was carried out at 2nd Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology "La Sapienza" University of Rome between June 1998 and October 2000. Eighty consecutive infertile women underwent microlaparoscopy for infertility. In 42 patients only a local anesthesia was performed, whereas 36 received intravenous sedation (propofol) in addition to local anesthesia. A 2-mm. microlaparoscope was used. The pregnancy outcome after diagnostic and operative microlaparoscopy at 6-30 months follow up was evaluated and it was similar to pregnancy rate after 10-mm laparoscopy. Microlaparoscopy under local anesthesia is a safe, effective and cost saving for evaluation and treatment of infertility.
