The tv in Italy - even in times of network - continues to play a role sdoganatore of themes and culture, if only for the sake of numbers: according to the data (see Auditel 2010 and the first half of 2011) the last few seasons have seen an increase in viewership to unprecedented levels. It is particularly high values mainly due to the integration of traditional television audiences and those of other tv, distributed between satellite, digital terrestrial, IPTV and mobile. Supported, therefore, by the numbers, we still have to recognize the medium of television, especially in the versions of the digital audiovisual products, a strategic role in Italian society. From this scenario, it is worth assessing the potential and critical issues that the Italian TV offered in relation to the event of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy. The celebrations television can still function as a means of unification? According to viewership data of some programs, the answer seems negative. However, the evidence on the convening power of the new public service media are varied and the most significant coming from Benigni's performance at the Festival of Sanremo 2011, which makes cross-content otherwise inaccessible to many groups of viewers, unifying into a single square television more than half of Italians who watched the tv in that hour, with a peak of 70% in some moments of the evening (source: auditel 2011). And Italy, its history and its people are clothed with meanings capable of speaking to different audiences of the media, confirming the role of television as a privileged custodian of organized forms of individual and collective memory.
