The words nanosciences and nanotechnologies indicate the ability to study, assembly, manipulate and characterise matter whose size varies between 100 and 1 nanometre. This means working with molecules since one nanometre (nm) is one billionth of a metre and corresponds approximately to 10 times the size of an atom of hydrogen. The fields in which nanotechnologies are used are almost endless, so much so that in practice all the most important fields of production are deeply affected by these technologies. In fact, it’s surprising to see how all the greatest innovative ideas in this field are based on the careful analysis of structures that nature has created over the centuries.
I termini nanoscienze e nanotecnologie indicano la capacità di studiare, assemblare, manipolare e caratterizzare la materia a livello di dimensioni comprese tra 100 ed 1 nanometri. Ciò significa operare a livello molecolare dal momento che 1 nanometro (nm) è un milionesimo di millimetro e corrisponde all’incirca a 10 volte la grandezza dell’atomo dell’idrogeno. I campi di applicazione delle nanotecnologie sono pressoché illimitati tanto che praticamente tutti i settori produttivi più importanti possono esserne influenzati in maniera consistente, e stupisce pensare come tutte le più grandi innovazioni in questo settore, siano il risultato dell’attenta analisi della natura.
