Vasari's Vite and Van Mander's Schilderboeck represent the first steps in Italy and in the Low Countries towards an organic history of the figurative arts. Both aim at representing not only the works but also the deeds and behaviours of the artists. The identity of the artist emerges in these texts as a complex interaction of factors, both individual and collective. Examining the process of negotiation between an artist, his work and the surrounding environment, the author enables us to understand how identities are shaped in these two major works.

Abstract
Vasari's Vite and Van Mander's Schilderboeck represent the first steps in Italy and in the Low Countries towards an organic history of the figurative arts. Both aim at representing not only the works but also the deeds and behaviours of the artists. The identity of the artist emerges in these texts as a complex interaction of factors, both individual and collective. Examining the process of negotiation between an artist, his work and the surrounding environment, the author enables us to understand how identities are shaped in these two major works.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
