Il genitivo in persiano antico. Un caso esemplare di categoria polisemica

In this paper we investigate the syntactic functions and the semantic roles of the Old Persian genitive case. A careful analysis of textual data reveals that, when the genitive is an adnominal modifier, its functions and roles are those typical of this case in a cross-linguistic perspective. However, when the genitive is a clause constituent, its functional range also includes a broad spectrum of other functions and roles, such as Recipient, Addressee or Benefactive. It is well known that these roles were typically conveyed in other languages by the dative which is entirely absent from Old Persian texts. According to the results of our analysis this range of functions and roles can be accounted for if we consider the Old Persian genitive case as a polysemic category, having the expression of the Possessor as the core function. On the other hand, the other attested functions, which are not typical of the genitive, can best be interpreted as radial and metaphorical extensions from the nuclear meaning of Possessor.

In questo contributo sono presi in esame le funzioni sintattiche e i ruoli semantici del caso genitivo del persiano antico. Dalla disamina dei dati testuali risulta che, quando il genitivo è un modificatore nominale, le sue funzioni e i suoi ruoli sono quelli tipici di questo caso in una prospettiva interlinguistica. Differentemente, quando il genitivo è un costituente frasale, la gamma di funzioni include anche un ampio spettro di altre funzioni e ruoli, come Ricevente, Destinatario o Beneficiario. Nella maggior parte delle lingue indoeuropee di antica attestazione, come è noto, questi ruoli sono veicolati dal dativo, caso completamente scomparso in persiano antico. Secondo i risultati della presente analisi, la gamma di ruoli e funzioni del genitivo del persiano antico trova una spiegazione se questo caso viene considerato una categoria polisemica, con l'espressione del Possessore quale funzione centrale. Nella medesima prospettiva, le altre funzioni attestate, non tipiche del genitivo, possono essere interpretate come estensioni metaforiche radiali dal significato centrale di Possessore.
