An existing refinery distillation column (with top, bottom, and one sidestream product) separating benzene from the product of a reforming unit has been identified at steady state and its behaviour has been simulated both at steady and unsteady state. The objective of the work has been the control of benzene concentration in the bottom and in the sidestream by means of two SISO loops. By maintaining a constant internal reflux rate an almost complete decoupling of the two control loops was first predicted by the RGA analysis, then shown by dynamic simulation of the column under the proposed multivariable control scheme.
