In order to prepare polymers provided with a better haemocompatibility both with respect to the coagulative cascade and to platelet aggregation and activation, we have synthesized a new polyurethane containing in one chain extender [di(2-hydroxy-ethyl)hexadecylamine] both a long chain alkyl group (able to bind albumin) and ammonium groups able, after suitable quaternization reaction, to bind ionically significant amounts of heparin. The polymer has been characterized by molecular weight measurements, IR and NMR spectroscopy and DSC. It was seen that the order of adsorption of heparin and albumin by the polymer films plays an important role, and that the heparin activity is maintained only when the polymers are previously albuminized anf then heparinized, whereas an after-treatment with albumin apparently undoes the biological activity of previuosly heparinized polymers.

Abstract
In order to prepare polymers provided with a better haemocompatibility both with respect to the coagulative cascade and to platelet aggregation and activation, we have synthesized a new polyurethane containing in one chain extender [di(2-hydroxy-ethyl)hexadecylamine] both a long chain alkyl group (able to bind albumin) and ammonium groups able, after suitable quaternization reaction, to bind ionically significant amounts of heparin. The polymer has been characterized by molecular weight measurements, IR and NMR spectroscopy and DSC. It was seen that the order of adsorption of heparin and albumin by the polymer films plays an important role, and that the heparin activity is maintained only when the polymers are previously albuminized anf then heparinized, whereas an after-treatment with albumin apparently undoes the biological activity of previuosly heparinized polymers.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
