We measured the reflectivity spectra in the photon energy range 15–35 eV of ultrafine gold particles evaporated onto quartz substrates. We interpret the energy shift of the 22 eV reflectivity peak in the smallest clusters in terms of the modification of the band structure of the gold bulk owing to the reduction of the nearest-neighbour distances. The behaviour of the high energy features is described using an extended X-ray absorption fine structure model.
