Abstract
Starting from the historical events that have characterized the life of the capital of Uruguay, the authors examine the peculiarities of the city and its connotations as symbolic caput as well as political centre of the Country. The capital has been able to maintain its force of attraction and cohesion in both the happiest moments in the history of Uruguay and in the darkest days of economic and political crisis. Montevideo was seen and celebrated in several aspects: as a natural harbour, a centre of cultural significance, of a long literary, art and architecture tradition, a clear symbol of the batllista splendour. But the years of suffering, economic stagnation and political crises of the second half of the past century lead to a serious state of decline of Montevideo and to the tragedy of the dictatorship, making it the symbolic place of the memory of the national tragedy and of the historical reflection on it.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
