The article describes the results of the working group dedicated to the definition of a National standard supporting the interoperability in the digital preservation process. The successful effort has been guided by the Italian Committee on Archives and Records Management of the Italian Standard Organization. The solution is just a part of a more complex strategy, and is based on the definition of an XML Schema allowing the use of a shared data structure to describe the relevant metadata of records and their aggregations when stored permanently on a digital medium.
