INTRODUCTION. One of the most important ozone's characteristics are its big oxidizing power and the ability of breaking down macromolecular components of bacterial cells, fungi and virus which makes it a potential sterilizing agent. AIM OF WORK. The Authors describe the efficacy of ozone and its ability to interfere with bacterial flora which can lead to the establishment of peri-implant inflammation that can jeopardize the success of a prosthetic rehabilitation. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The Authors used a HealOzone™ device; 8 patients of both sexes were selected, aged between 29 and 54 years. All patients were healthy and not smokers. 16 implants were used, 8 contaminated by plaque (experimental implants) and 8 untreated (control implants). RESULTS. All implants were analysed by SEM, highlighting the sterilization obtained thanks to ozone. CONCLUSIONS. The results of this study suggest that oxygen ozone therapy could be a possible therapeutic device in periodontal and implant maintenance therapy since it may act selectively against pathogens present in periodontal tissues. Decontamination of surgical sites could improve surgical and clinical success rate.
