We introduce the notion of renormalization scheme for regularized $\varphi^4_4$ theories in order to investigate the continuum limit We point out simple phenomena which suggest the interest og generalized cut-off actions containing "antiferromagnetic" terms for the construction of non-trivial (non-Gaussian) limits. Parts of this paper are expository and may serve as an introduction to scalar field theory in $4$ spae-time dimensions.
