Same-sex families in Italy compared to Spain

This study examines existing information on same-sex unions in Italy. In the first part of the paper, we describe the social and demographic characteristics of homosexuals and same-sex unions in Italy according to limited available data. We then discuss the institutional and legal frameworks that affect homosexuals and homosexual couples and families and consider the legal and political debates affecting them, their union formation, and civil liberties. We consider their situation in response to the European Parliament’s recent recommendations on the equal treatment of same-sex unions and in comparison to Spain where conditions for gays and lesbians are more favourable.
